The world of professional sports is always evolving and changing. These can range from the rules, to the penalties, to even adding new teams. And, of course, over the years, tastes in uniforms and jerseys change as well.
While many of the new jerseys that have come out in recent years are nicer and more refined than ever, they are just missing something compared to old jerseys. Maybe it’s the lack of bright colors and cool designs, or the nostalgia factor.
Whatever the reason, many of us love and are attached to old throwback or retro jerseys, and wish that they would make a comeback. With that in mind, this article will take a look at 15 jerseys that we wish professional sports teams would bring back permanently.
15. St. Louis Rams Blue and Gold Jersey From 1973 to 1999
While the Rams jerseys in the modern day are pretty great, they can’t hold a torch to the legendary blue and gold jerseys. The Rams wore them for over 2 decades and some of the best players to ever play for the Rams (such as Kurt Warner) wore these jerseys with pride. In fact, the last season the Rams wore these jerseys full time they actually won the Super Bowl. With the Rams back in Los Angeles now, where these blue and gold jerseys originated, now is the perfect time to bring them back.
14. Kansas City Wizards Rainbow Jersey From 1996
The Kansas City Wizards have been known as Sporting Kansas City for years now, long ago abandoning the goofy “Wizards” nickname they had when they joined MLS in its inaugural season. At the time, they went with the easy marketing. Kansas City Wizards. Wizard of Oz. We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto. Thus, the rainbow kit was born as a tribute to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” the Oscar winning song performed by Judy Garland in the classic movie. It all made sense, even if it was corny.
Sporting KC now sport a handsome light blue kit, with a minimalist crest. It’s pretty slick, but we’re pretty nostalgic for the classic rainbow look. In fact, the team wore these special tribute jerseys for a game in 2017 (see below). The KC supporters still call their section of the stadium The Cauldron (because Wizards have cauldrons — get it?), so more rainbow jerseys please.
13. The “Mighty Ducks” Jersey From 1993-2006
The Anaheim Ducks have some of the better current jerseys in the NHL, but they actually rank pretty low in terms of other jerseys that the Ducks have worn. Way back when the team was known as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, they had some amazing jerseys. They featured a very cool old school duck-shaped goalie mask and hockey sticks that resemble a skull and crossbones. These jerseys were worn for well over a decade. The likes of Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne have all worn these jerseys during their time with the ducks, and we would love to see this uniform make a full-time comeback.
12. Philadelphia Eagles Kelly Green Jerseys From 1985 to 1996
For a large part of their existence, the Philadelphia Eagles wore a sharp and striking all-green jersey which was known as the Kelly Green Jersey. Greats like Randall Cunningham and Reggie White adorned these gorgeous jerseys. They were very simple, yet not boring, which is how great and long-lasting jersey color choices should be. However, the team went through a rebranding and changed over to a slightly different green to keep up with the times. We would love to see the Kelly Green jerseys return, at least as an alternate for a few games.
11. Anaheim Angels Jersey From 1997 to 2001
Huge rebranding’s take place in sports quite often. However, they normally involve relocation from one city to another. However, that wasn’t the case when the Angels made the switch from the California Angels to become the Anaheim Angels. They didn’t switch locations, but made massive changes to their jerseys and colors. They went from red to blue, and had some of the coolest jerseys in the MLB from 1997-2001. They featured pinstripes, blue sleeves and a fierce red logo.
10. Toronto Raptors Dinosaur Away Jersey From 1995 to 1999
This jersey is the stuff of legends for Raptors fans and fans of the NBA in general. The Raptors have had some cool jersey iterations throughout the years, but none can hold a torch to the jerseys that feature an oversized Raptor on the front of the jersey, dribbling a basketball. Vince Carter and many other Raptors greats wore the jerseys and while they have come back a few times, we would love to see them come back in a more permanent fashion. They were only a mainstay for four seasons, and deserve a comeback.
9. Phoenix Coyotes Jersey From 1996 to 2003
Some people might question why the state of Arizona even has an NHL team, but you can’t question their jersey designs. Right from the get-go, during their inaugural 1996 season, the Phoenix Coyotes got it right with their jerseys. They were about as 90s as you can get with the color, design and patterns. The abstract-looking coyote on the front was great, as was the unique border and color choices. The jerseys really popped and were worn by the likes of Jeremy Roenick and Shane Doan and it’s a shame they were only worn for about 7 seasons.
8. Houston Rockets Jersey From 1995 to 2003
After winning their second straight championship, the Houston Rockets changed up their logo and uniforms. Their makeover included a logo with an actual rocket in it, and the jerseys were something else. The navy color scheme and pinstripes gave the jersey some personality while it was being worn by legends such as Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler. While it only lasted about 8 years, it was remembered very fondly by most fans and many would enjoy it being brought back.
7. Atlanta Hawks Jersey From 1995 to 1999
The Hawks have always had some of the best jerseys and the best color scheme in the NBA, but this jersey is the best of them all. Even by 1990s standards, the comically large cartoon hawk on the front of the jersey was a little bit over the top. Even still, we loved it, along with the red and orange color scheme. The likes of Mookie Blaylock and Dikembe Mutumbo wore the jerseys with pride and would love to see the current Hawks team don these jerseys in the modern day.
6. Liverpool Away Jersey From 1982
Soccer jerseys are notorious for being great and with so many different leagues all throughout the world, there have been some cool jerseys. However, very few of them are as great as the Liverpool away jersey from 1982. The jersey featured a yellow design with stripes, and red accents that really made the shirts pop. The jerseys obviously worked as Liverpool won the Football League Cup in the 1982/83 season.
5. Vancouver Canucks Flying V Jersey From 1978 to 1985
The Vancouver Canucks have had some of the more adventurous and interesting jerseys in the history of the NHL. Everyone seems to go to the old school jersey with the skate on it, but we are fonder of the flying V. We are likely going to catch some flak for that, but the simplicity of the flying V, along with the “loud” color scheme, made it an instant classic. Legends like Stan Smyl and Thomas Gradin wore the uniform and we would love to see the young Canucks team of today rock this throwback with pride.
4. Buffalo Sabres Jersey From 1996 to 2006
There have been some amazing jerseys throughout the history of the NHL, but you would be hard pressed to find one better than the black and white Sabres jersey that the team from Buffalo wore for a decade. The colors were fierce, the logo of a Buffalo was badass and they were just hands down some of the coolest jerseys ever. Players like Michael Peca and Dominik Hasek wore these jerseys and we would love to see the likes of Jack Eichel and co. wear them again in the coming years.
3. Denver Nuggets Rainbow Skyline Jersey From 1981 to 1993
The Denver Nuggets haven’t been afraid to incorporate some very interesting logos and uniforms throughout the team’s history. However, there is one that sticks out as not only the best Nuggets jersey ever, but one of the best NBA jerseys period. The Nuggets rainbow skyline jersey they wore for over a decade is the stuff of legends. It features the skyline of Denver, in a mountain, in front of a rainbow background with the rest of the jersey being gold. These were worn by the likes of David Thompson, Fat Lever and Alex English, some of the best players in the history of the Denver Nuggets.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Creamsicle Jersey From 1976 to 1996
This list hasn’t seen many NFL uniforms simply because of how basic and simple most of them are. While that is generally the case, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers bucked that trend in a giant way with their fluorescently orange jerseys that were dubbed, the Creamsicles. They wore the jerseys for a period of 20 years and legends such as Hardy Nickerson and Lee Roy Selmon rocked the bright jerseys. While these have made periodic appearances, we would love for them to come back full-time if at all possible.
1. Minnesota Timberwolves Jersey From 1996 to 2008
The new jerseys that the Timberwolves released recently are pretty great, but even they cannot take away the nostalgic effect that the 1996-2008 jerseys bring for NBA fans. The likes of Kevin Garnett and Latrell Sprewell donned these jerseys that we believe are one of the best in any sport, period. The jerseys had unique lettering and numbers, with great colors and cool tree accents. The logo of a wolf in the forest was also amazing. There really isn’t anything that the designers got wrong with this jersey and uniform.
