The Sam Darnold era in New York has officially begun.
On Wednesday, the Jets dealt veteran free agent acquisition Teddy Bridgewater and a sixth round pick to New Orleans for a third round pick.
This cleared the way for the team to announce that 2018 third overall pick Sam Darnold is the team’s starter and will be under center in week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
Bridgewater, who signed a one-year deal with the Jets in the off-season, heads to the Saints as insurance for superstar QB Drew Brees. The 25-year-old Pro Bowler was good in the pre-season, showing signs he has recovered from a gruesome knee injury suffered in 2016.
Bridgewater completed 28 of 38 passes for 316 yards and two TDs, against one interception.
Darnold, the much heralded rookie out of USC, won the starting job based on completing 29 of 45 pre-season passes with two touchdowns to one interception, along with an 83.9 rating.
