If you tuned into the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday evening, you may have caught a rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” that made you scratch your head. Grammy award-winning artist Fergie (also from the Black Eyed Peas) was on hand to do the honors, but her performance left most people (and some of the players) wondering what the hell just happened.
Fergie’s version was a prolonged, almost sultry, number that felt like she was performing in a cheap jazz lounge, not singing the national anthem in front of a live television audience of millions. Here’s the entire video, if you haven’t seen it. Pay attention for Draymond Green trying to keep a straight face at about 1:55 in.
Fergie was roasted on social media, and SportsCenter was quick to put together a Top 10 list of the worst national anthem renditions in sports history. When TMZ Sports caught up to her on Monday, Fergie gave her first statement about the performance and basically said she tried her best.
“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” Fergie said. “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
Thankfully the Barenaked Ladies performed the Canadian national anthem (don’t forget about the Raptors, after all) without any controversy, despite Canada recently changing the lyrics of their anthem to be more gender neutral (yes, really).
