The Chicago Bulls announced on Wednesday that Bobby Portis has been suspended for the first eight games of the season, following an altercation on Tuesday that saw teammate Nikola Mirotic hospitalized with a fractured jaw and a concussion.

According to ESPN, the two were engaged in some heated trash talk during practice, that escalated into a full blown physical altercation:

Mirotic charged at Portis twice before Portis threw a punch and connected with Mirotic’s face, league sources said. Mirotic dropped to the floor and lay there for several minutes before getting up, league sources said.

Bulls VP of basketball operations John Paxson has said that both players were at fault for the incident, even though Mirotic got the worst of it. He also said Mirotic would likely miss four-to-six weeks due to his injuries, which will likely require surgery.
