Former WWE champion CM Punk surprised everyone in late 2014 when he showed up on a UFC pay-per-view and announced he had signed a contract to fight in the world’s largest MMA promotion. It would be almost two-full years before fight fans actually saw him in the octagon, where it was quickly revealed that it’s never a great idea to start your MMA training in your mid-30s and expect to have a chance. Young Mickey Gall beat up CM Punk quite thoroughly from the opening bell, right up until he slapped on a rear-naked choke three minutes into the fight and ended it.

CM Punk’s UFC career appeared to be all but over after that. However, it was later revealed that he made a ton of money for losing in three minutes, and the UFC’s buyrate also saw a strong uptick from being curious about Punk’s transition from pro wrestling into MMA. Punk hasn’t officially retired and the UFC hasn’t officially done anything like terminate his contract. So the possibility of a second fight for Punk has always existed. In fact, Punk has even openly campaigned for a second shot in the cage in the media.

All of that makes this Instagram post by notable MMA striking coach Duke Roufus very interesting. While showcasing the incredible winning record of his Roufusport fight team so far in 2017, he casually dropped a “CM Punk vs. TBA” in the middle of it.

What does this mean? Does Roufus know something that the rest of us don’t? Or is it just wishful thinking? Punk is almost 39-years-old at this point, so a lengthy MMA career is probably out of the question. But maybe he can cash in on one more fight, before inevitably resurfacing in the world of professional wrestling (which pretty much everyone believes will happen sooner or later).
