The mini crisis at Arsenal continues.
After failing to qualify for the Champions League last campaign, the Gunners have started the 2017-18 Premier League season with just four wins in eight games, leaving them nine points behind league leaders Manchester City. The pressure from fans for the board to fire Arsene Wenger continues to grow, and now a new report claims that one of their best midfielders will soon be making his exit from Emirates Stadium.
John Cross of The Mirror reports that German international Mesut Ozil has already told teammates that he will be joining Manchester United when the transfer window opens in January. The 29-year-old former Real Madrid star has been suffering from a knee injury in the early days of the EPL campaign and lost his starting spot in Arsenal’s midfield. His contract also expires at the end of the year, and he seems content to sign somewhere else as a free transfer. Arsenal will likely be forced to sell him in January just to recoup some of the €50 million transfer fee they spent on him in 2013.
If Ozil does come to Old Trafford, it will reunite him with manager Jose Mourinho. The two worked together while Ozil became a star at Real Madrid after the Galacticos scooped him up from Weder Bremen in 2008.
The Mirror also indicates that Ozil is seeking a substantial pay raise. Arsenal allegedly offered him a new deal at £275,000 per week, but Ozil’s agents are seeking £350,000 a week (£18.2 million annually).
