“The Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead!”
It’s been a common battle cry for Cleveland sports fans, ever since LeBron James and the Cavaliers stormed back from a 3-1 deficit in the 2016 NBA Finals to upset the two-time MVP Steph Curry and the 73-win Warriors. It’s not just Twitter users who are poking fun, either. LeBron’s Halloween party featured a decoration of a skeleton playing the drums, with the band name “3-1 Lead” on the bass drum. Some of the party snacks were tombstone-shaped cookies with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson’s name on them.
But Cleveland fans may want to pipe down a bit, as all their cocky trolling might be coming back to bite them in the behind. The Indians, who once held a 3-1 lead over the Chicago Cubs in the World Series, have been pushed the brink. The Cubs dominated in Game Six at Cleveland’s Progressive Field, winning 9-3. Now a Game 7 showdown between Kyle Hendricks and Corey Kluber will decide the 2016 World Series, and end a looooooong championship drought for one team or the other.
The internet lit up with delight when it became possible that a team from Cleveland might be the one who blows a 3-1 lead this time around.
