Somewhat lost amongst all the hype of the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather circus is that there isn’t a single championship title on the line. Mayweather, who was a multiple weight class champion throughout his undefeated career, relinquished all of his titles when he “retired” after getting to 49-0. McGregor has never boxed professionally, so of course he isn’t bringing any gold into the fight.

But this spectacle of a fight isn’t about to let the facts get in the way of a good story!

For reasons that weren’t really explained, the World Boxing Council announced on Wednesday that the August 26th superfight will be contended for a brand new Money Belt, which is fitting since this fight only exists to line the pockets of the two fighters at the expense of gullible fight fans (like me).

“The WBC has had in Floyd Mayweather the most loyal champion in our history,” said WBC head Mauricio Sulaiman. “He conquered five titles in five different divisions. Has won the diamond belt, the gold belt, the emerald belt. And in order to celebrate this great event between the WBC champion and the UFC hero Conor McGregor, the WBC has created ‘The Money Belt.’”

“This belt has 3360 diamonds, 600 sapphires, 100 emeralds, and 1.5 kilograms of solid 24 karat gold and alligator leather than comes from Italy,” Sulaiman added. “As you can see, it’s one whole crocodile [sic] and the medallion is not centered to preserve the style of the alligator.”

It may have a bunch of shiny jewels in it, but that sure is one ugly title belt. Of course, neither fighter actually cares about this thing, since each are projected to make at least $100 million on Saturday night, with Mayweather’s cut rumored to reach the $250-$300 million range.
